Where that route uses a toll road, the no-toll time is shown under it. *Google sends these trips on I-66 inside the Beltway in the direction with no toll at that hour: VDOT tolls it eastbound in the morning and westbound in the evening, so these trips should be free.24

THE SHIFTA 7 to 7 shift drives in the quiet hours.
Across the Washington area in 2025, traffic added about 25% to drive times in the 6 a.m. hour and 32% in the 7 p.m. hour, against 57% at 8 a.m. and 72% at 5 p.m.23 Ahmed’s table shows it: from Springfield, 14 to 22 minutes to arrive by 6:45, but 20 to 40 to arrive by 8:30.22
I-95From Lorton and the south, leave early anyway.
I-95 north is slow before 6 a.m., and the region’s worst bottleneck in 2025 was I-95 south at Route 123 by the Occoquan, with a backup on the road about 10 hours a day.25 From Lorton the drive is 20 to 35 minutes to arrive by 6:45 and 28 to 65 to arrive by 8:30.22
EXPRESS LANESGallows Road has an Express Lanes exit one way only.
Southbound 495 Express Lanes have their own exit at Gallows Road, by the hospital. Northbound lanes do not: the first northbound exit past the hospital is Lee Highway (U.S. 29).26 So the lanes help most on the drive in from the north, from McLean and Tysons.
TOLLSNight shift and day shift meet different tolls.
The I-95 Express Lanes switch direction: north on weekday mornings and south from midday, so a night-shift drive north in the evening and south in the morning runs against them.26 I-66 inside the Beltway is tolled eastbound 5:30 to 9:30 a.m. and westbound 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, with 2025 average tolls of $6.35 east and $4.88 west, and free for three or more people with an E-ZPass Flex.24 From Arlington, the day shift never meets that toll, while the night shift drives in the tolled direction both ways.

SHUTTLEA Metro shuttle for Inova staff.
Inova runs a shuttle for its IFMC and ICPH team members from Dunn Loring Metro to the IFMC Tower lobby, the Women’s Hospital lobby and the Schar Cancer Center, Monday to Friday, 5:45 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.4 Inova also lists team-member commuter shuttles from Gainesville and Manassas on I-66 and from the PRTC Transit Center in Woodbridge on I-95, plus reserved carpool spaces in the IFMC employee garage.4 Visitor parking in the Blue, Green and Gray garages is $5 a day.3

Doctor loans, in plain words
Buying a home on a doctor’s timeline.
A “doctor loan” or “physician mortgage” is a name lenders give their own programs. It is not a government program, and the terms change from lender to lender. Here is the standard rulebook most conventional loans follow, so you know what to ask. Ahmed works with loan officers who offer doctor loans and can connect you.
START DATEBuying before your job starts.
Under Fannie Mae’s standard rules for conventional loans, a lender can count a signed job offer or contract as income before your first paycheck, when the job starts no later than 90 days after closing and you have extra savings set aside.18 Doctor-loan programs set their own rules, so ask each lender how early you can close.
STUDENT LOANSHow student loans are counted.
Under the same standard rules, a documented $0 payment on an income-driven plan can count as $0, and for loans in deferment the lender may use 1% of the balance as the monthly payment.19 Doctor-loan programs often advertise gentler treatment; ask each lender.
MORTGAGE INSURANCELess than 20% down.
Private mortgage insurance (PMI) protects the lender, and it is often required on a conventional loan with less than 20% down. The CFPB notes that some lenders offer low-down-payment loans without PMI, and that you usually pay a higher interest rate for it.20
LOAN SIZEThe 2026 conforming loan limit.
For 2026 the conforming loan limit for a one-unit home is $1,249,125 in every county and city in this guide. A larger loan is a jumbo loan, with its own rules.21
From Ahmed
Doctors, dentists, nurses and staff: call me.
Buying near the hospital, selling when your next job takes you elsewhere, or just want straight answers about Northern Virginia? I’m here, in English or Arabic.
I also work with loan officers who offer doctor loans, and I’m glad to connect you. Each lender sets its own terms, so it pays to compare.
When a new job starts the search, I begin with the trip to work: which towns are close, which have a bus or train that goes there, and what homes cost in each. Hospital shifts often start early, late or overnight, so we also look at the drive at the hours you will really make it.
