Getting there

Getting to Quantico without a car.

Quantico has a VRE station but no Metro, and no commuter bus to the base turned up on the operator pages checked for this guide. Most people who work on base drive, so the drive times above matter most here.

A silver two-level commuter train crosses a long dark steel railroad trestle over a creek mouth, with white boats moored below and the Potomac River beyond.

  • VREA station, but the trains run toward D.C.

VRE’s Fredericksburg Line stops at Quantico, 550 Railroad Avenue, with free parking.4 On the weekday timetable, trains leave Quantico northbound at 5:42, 5:57, 6:17, 6:37, 7:02, 7:42 and 8:22 a.m., and southbound trains reach Quantico from 2:42 to 7:55 p.m.3 That suits living near Quantico and working closer to D.C. It gives no morning arrival at Quantico from the towns to the north.

  • ACCESSTrain riders use the Fuller Road gate.

VRE tells riders to reach the Quantico station through the Main Gate at 3060 Fuller Road, to allow extra time for gate delays, and says Military Police may check the IDs of riders getting off the train.4 The base’s shuttle for its employees has been discontinued until further notice.5

  • GATESGates and visitor passes.

Fuller Road Gate is open 24 hours a day and Russell Road Gate 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Trusted Traveler program is suspended, so everyone in the car needs valid credentials or a pass. The Visitor Control Center, 27190 Russell Road, Stafford, is open weekdays 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. Civilians pre-enroll in DBIDS and bring a REAL ID, a NAVMC 5512 form and the name of a government sponsor.6

  • DRIVEThe Express Lanes run north in the morning.

The reversible I-95 Express Lanes run north on weekday mornings, 2:30 to 11 a.m., and south from noon.7 So a morning drive south to Quantico from Woodbridge or Lorton uses the regular lanes, and the Express Lanes help on the way home only after noon. Carpools of three or more ride them free with an E-ZPass Flex in HOV mode.8

From Ahmed

Pick the commute first, then the house.

When a new job starts the search, I begin with the trip to work: which towns are close, which have a train or bus that goes there, and what homes cost in each. Then we look at houses in the towns that pass that test.

If you will work at Quantico, I can walk you through the towns and the numbers around it, in English or Arabic.
